Colonial Virginia

Jamestown, the colony established by Great Britain in 1607, was the first permanent English colony in the new world. The site is under archeological excavation and nothing remains of the original 400-year-old structures but the park service has recreated some of the walls and the crumbling church is from the 17th century.

It was at Yorktown that the British were defeated by George Washington and the Continental Army. There are some fancy houses around from that time, one has a cannonball stuck in the wall.
